From Vol. 1, chapter 4 of Frankenstein (1818)

First-edition text of the scene in which Victor Frankenstein animates his Creature. Mary Shelley first wrote, “I beheld my man compleated” [sic], then decided to shift attention from this new “man” to the creator’s pride, revising to “I beheld the accomplishment of my toils.” These are typical pages of economical duodecimo printing (12 pages per sheet). While the size of the page is small, the formatting is readable: fewer than ten words per line, and fewer than 100 words per page.
